Disability Rights Awareness Month by Priya Singh
Disability Rights Awareness Month reminds us of the importance of inclusion, dignity, equal rights and participation for people with disabilities. At Camphill, residents are encouraged to understand and advocate for their rights while finding purpose, belonging and independence in everyday life.

In South Africa, Disability Rights Awareness Month (DRAM) is observed from 3 November to 3 December every year. It serves as a reminder of our shared responsibility in creating inclusive environments, and promoting the rights, dignity and equal participation of persons with disabilities, in all aspects of societal, political, cultural and economic life.
At Camphill Village West Coast, we prioritise creating an inclusive environment and quality of life for all our residents. Our enterprises and cost saving activities allow residents the opportunity to contribute meaningfully towards the development and growth of Camphill, while simultaneously experiencing a sense of purpose and belonging. Our extensive recreational and leisure programs not only enable a healthy work-life balance for our residents, but also promote social and cultural knowledge and skills. At Camphill we encourage all residents to know and assert their rights through repetitive education and self-advocacy.

It is important to remember that disability is not a limitation but a different way of experiencing the world. And at the heart of our purpose as the Health and Wellbeing team, we strive to give quality to each resident’s individual experience.
