The role of ergonomics in our environment by Priya Singh
The right work environment can support both mental wellness and productivity. At Camphill, residents are given opportunities to explore different enterprises and find work that suits their abilities, while the natural farm environment supports their wellbeing.

The role of ergonomics in our environment by Priya Singh
Most of us know ergonomics in the workplace as the physical layout of a workstation, or the posture while sitting at a desk. While these are some of the important aspects involved, they are not the only ones. Ergonomics has evolved beyond just the physical layout of workstations. Ergonomics also includes the mental wellness of the workers and the environment in which they spend their working day.
Environmental Ergonomics is a branch of ergonomics that explores the way people interact with their physical environment, and the effect this physical environment has on them. Some aspects of environmental ergonomics include lighting, noise, and climate. Indoor office/corporate environments often have to be modified to simulate the natural environment to promote mental wellness and productivity.
At Camphill, part of how we ensure optimal environmental ergonomics for our residents is through a trial period. Residents spend time in each enterprise, after which the Wellbeing Team assists to find the just right fit. This process considers physical and mental capabilities and tolerances, and also allows the opportunity to assess where residents may further grow their abilities.
From walking to work while watching the sun rise, to nurturing calves and ploughing soil to produce food, the Camphill environment provides all the tools required to naturally foster mental wellness and productivity in the workplace.
Thank you to the dedication of our Wellbeing Team.
